What is a post protector pad?

A post protector pad is a foam-filled wrap that closes around a round steel post, from the ground up, so a person who runs into the post hits padding instead of bare steel. Ours are made to fit standard galvanised shade sail posts: NB100 (114.3 mm), NB125 (139.7 mm) and NB150 (165.1 mm), in 1.8 m, 2.0 m, 2.4 m lengths.

Will it fit? Post padding sizes

Measure around your post with a tape. About 359 mm is NB100 (114.3 mm), about 439 mm is NB125 (139.7 mm) and about 519 mm is NB150 (165.1 mm). Each size has its own pad.

NB100114.3 mm≈ 359 mmMost common shade sail post
NB125139.7 mm≈ 439 mmOften called "125 NB" or "139 pipe"
NB150165.1 mm≈ 519 mmStructural 168.3 mm pipe (≈529 mm round): ask us

Diameters are standard Australian pipe sizes (AS 1074 / AS/NZS 1163). Circumference = π × diameter, rounded. If your measurement is more than about 10 mm away from these, request a quote and we will confirm the fit before anything is made.

Choosing the pad length

  • The pad sits from the ground up.
  • It must stop below the lowest sail fixing, eye bolt or bracket, with a clear gap so the hardware can be tensioned and checked. The guide above allows about 300 mm (rule of thumb).
  • Common choices: 1.8 m (childcare and schools), 2.0 m (general), 2.4 m (tall posts and sports areas).

Step-by-step measuring and fitting instructions: post padding sizes and how to measure.

How deep should a shade sail post be?

As a rough trade guide, a standard 6.5 m galvanised post goes 1.2–2.2 m into the ground, leaving 4.3–5.3 m above ground. Go deeper for bigger sails and exposed sites. This is not engineering advice: final depth depends on sail size, wind region and soil.

See the full shade sail post depth guide: depth tables for full and half posts, steel cost in the ground vs above, typical galvanised pipe prices, concrete per footing, and fittings (caps, padeyes, brackets, touch-up).

Which posts do the pads fit?

Round galvanised steel pipe posts: NB100 (114.3 mm outside diameter), NB125 (139.7 mm) and NB150 (165.1 mm). NB200 (219.1 mm) and other sizes are by quote. Use the "Will it fit?" guide to check with a tape measure.

How long does delivery take?

Pads are made to order: allow about 4–6 weeks from payment to delivery. The current lead time is shown in the order form. Pads around 2 m long travel by courier, not Australia Post.

Do the pads make a playground compliant with Australian Standards?

No product claim is made about Australian Standards. Post pads help soften accidental bumps against posts. They do not replace compliant playground surfacing or your own site risk assessment.

Can I get my own colour or logo?

Choose from the listed colours. Custom colours, printing and non-standard sizes are by quote.

Can I return pads?

Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law always apply to faulty items or items not as described. Our change-of-mind policy for made-to-order pads is shown on the Returns & warranty page.

Do you install them?

Pads are designed to be wrapped around the post on site. Fitting instructions are supplied with the pads. If you are having a shade sail installed through ShadeSale, ask about adding pads to your quote.
